Diet for the Bile constitution in Tibetan medicine

In Detail

Article

In Tibetan medicine, the Bile constitution is connected with heat, energy, digestive fire, the liver and the bile system. When Bile is balanced, a person has strength, determination, clarity and the ability to act. When Bile becomes excessive, irritability, heat, tension, inflammatory tendencies and overexertion may appear.

The main principle for people of the Bile type is moderation. Neither overeating nor long gaps between meals are favourable. Food should be fresh and of good quality, but not too hot, too spicy or too heavy.

Boiled, stewed, steamed, baked or grilled dishes prepared without oil are suitable. Slightly cooled, but not cold, food is preferable. In taste, softer directions are recommended: astringent, mildly bitter and sweet.

Neutral foods often suit the Bile constitution: potatoes, pasta, milk, boiled vegetables and simple home-cooked meals. Food should not inflame the inner heat, but help maintain clarity and calmness.

Very spicy, salty, fatty, fried, smoked, sour and extremely hot dishes are unfavourable. Strong alcohol, exotic spicy meals and heavy food that increases heat are also not recommended.

The eating environment is also important. The room should be cool and well ventilated, with soft light. People of the Bile constitution should eat calmly, not during arguments, and should not combine meals with alcohol or smoking.

After eating, it is useful to rest for a short time instead of immediately moving into work, sport or conflict. The purpose of the Bile diet is to reduce excessive heat, preserve clarity and help a person act not through tension, but through balanced strength.
